THE BMJ HIGHLIGHT, WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS?

Delivering holistic care includes understanding, evaluating, and tailoring health advice to a patient's lifestyle, including periods of religious fasting such as Ramadan and Lent. This article demonstrates a number of factors that are important to consider and highlight, including safety netting, safely advising on medication changes where possible, and stratifying risk. It is also important to understand and gather individual practices and preferences, ultimately working together to support health.
PHOTO OF THE DAY: AN INSTRUMENTAL HISTORY

Dr. William W. Mayo, born in Salford near Manchester, moved to Rochester, Minnesota, in 1846 when he was 27 years old. He had two sons, Dr. Will J. Mayo and Dr. Charlie H. Mayo, who went on to found the Mayo Clinic and invent Mayo scissors. The Mayo Clinic is a world-renowned medical facility with a satellite campus in London. These are strong scissors that can cut rigid structures and sutures. The handles and the blades are the same length, with rounded edges and tips. While straight Mayo scissors are better suited for superficial work, curved Mayo scissors allow for better visualisation of deeper structures. Below is a summary of common surgical needles used in surgery, and how each type is engineered according to function.
